WHY NOT WIRELESS - LEARN WHAT'S BEST FOR YOUR SMART HOME

You may ask, “why bother smart wiring my home when I can just use wireless?” This is a common question we come across and with a large number of wireless products being promoted on the market, it’s no surprise.

Wireless products are great in situations where traditional cabling cannot be installed such as double brick 2 storey houses or as part of a hard-wired system for products like laptops and smartphones. You should always run cabling in place of a wireless system if you are building a new home, renovating or you have the opportunity.

There are many disadvantages of wireless including

  • Tend to be more expensive than hardwired equivalent products
  • Require 240V power or batteries to operate making for higher maintenance
  • Much slower speeds than hard-wired solutions
  • Subject to environmental factors causing the wireless to drop out or be slow
  • Limited range

Hardwired systems are very robust and reliable. They are also faster when it comes to internet and data speeds. A commonly used wireless gateway from your internet provider uses 802.11G which gives a MAXIMUM speed of 50Mbps or 50 Megabits per second. Your standard cat 5e cabling gives in excess of 180Mbps and Cat 6 cabling giving 1Gps or 1000 Megabits per second!

What does this all mean?

With the introduction of the NBN (National Broadband Network) giving speeds of 100Mbps and more products available to stream music/movies in your home has only a wireless setup you cannot take full advantage of what’s on offer.
